This bike is appropriately sized for a 4 year old who already knows how to ride a bike well. But with the seat at the lowest setting, my kid (41 inches tall) can just barely touch the ground with her toes, and that is just not a secure position for learning to ride. I wound up buying a pivotal seat and seat post to get the seat low enough for her to put her feet down flat. Although the (sale) sticker price of this bike was lower, with the additional items I've needed to buy to make the bike suitable for my kid to learn to ride on, I'm thinking I would have been better off just buying a woom or spawn or prevelo to begin with. My kid has also struggled a bit with where to put her hands on the handlebars. I notice that many of the kid brands use BMX-style riser bars, which make it very obvious where the hands are supposed to go. I've also had to add my own thread locker to the brake lever reach adjustment screws, which otherwise readily come out of adjustment.

I have paid more for a derailleur than this whole bike cost... That said this bike has excellent specs. The biggest positive about this bike is the freehub. Coaster bikes are horrible for kids learning. This is the perfect bike for kids coming from a strider. The hand brakes have tons of adjustment to dial in the best hand placement. My daughter started pedaling and now she's a natural. The paint on these frames is fire too. She's 4 years old. Her feet fit flat on the ground. Geometry is dialed.

My daughter has resisted learning to ride a bike. She is 47" tall so definitely almost too big for this bike. I hesitated buying a bike she will be almost too big for, but I wanted her to be able to feel confident that she wouldn't wipe out b/c of the weight & size of the bike. She spent 30-45 min the first day just gliding on it with her legs hanging over the pedals, then the 2nd day she told me not to help and figured out the pedals in less than 30 minutes. Unlike some other bikes, the handle bars are lower, which makes the bike look even smaller on her, but provided her more control. Only complaint is she said the bike seat isn't comfortable so i'll be looking for a cushion or replacement seat (took off a star for the seat). Happy with the price point (with sale) and quality of bike and will pass it on to her younger sibling when she's done. We will likely move her up to a 20" soon.

Great bike. We transitioned from the hotwalk to this bike and my son had no problems at all. Quality is amazing the geometry is perfect. It’s awesome seeing the thought put into this bike for younger riders. I have had many friends purchase this bike after seeing my son on it and have the same experience.

My 4 year old is above average height for his age and is ready to transition from his kick bike. The bike would be an excellent fit except he can barely tiptoe with the seat post dropped to the clamp. A kid learning to pedal should be able to flat foot to be confident and comfortable. This seems like it would be an easy fix for specialized as there is an extra 2” above the weld on the seat tube and at full extension the seat height is ridiculously high. Otherwise excellent bike quality for a super price, I would have given 5 stars if my kid wasn’t discouraged from the stand over. Last suggestion, this is a kids bike maybe some fun colors?

My 4 year old boy was 40'' tall on his birthday. With the seat all the way down, and the handle bars adjuted in, the bike fits hime perfectly. This is our second premium 16'' "mountian bike." My older boy had another brand. This bike is light years ahead of our old one. Aeronomical frame lets him in and out of cockpit easily. Nice length to the crank allows him to go fast enough and easily ride uphill, and you can tell the pedals are for a kids bike. They are bigger than his first bike and smaller than mine, perfect. The handlebars have multiple settings to pull the bars closer to the rider and the brakes! Awesome brakes! It is so hard to walk the line of tiny hands being able to pull them, and still deliver enough stopping power. This bike does it. He made the transition from coaster brakes to hand in 30 seconds. He is actually much better at the hand brakes then coaster. Then the Specialized Logoed tires are so cool. This bike made my boy a better rider. Just buy it!

My 3 year old is 40 inches tall with a long torso and shorter legs and can rip around on a Strider, but the Jett is still to tall for him to sit on the seat and touch the ground with his feet even at the lowest position. That makes learning to ride it nearly impossible in our experience. I'm sure it will be better once his legs are taller than 19-20 inches. With only a 16-17in stand over with a diaper in the way we probably need a few weeks to learn to ride or to wait for a leg growth spurt.

Cool bike. Seems like a good middle ground which has good features, decently light weight and at a good price. I would recommend, but for other bikes in this category the seat height is a bit tall for a new rider which is about 19.75 inches at the lowest. My son was in the recommended range at about 39 inches tall, but would not be able to touch the ground. No body can learn how to bike if they can’t touch the ground. I bought a mini pivotal race seat and post and with that it’s 18 inches off the ground. With being advertised as a beginning bike that will grow with your child, it seems to lack the capability for the earlier riders. Again nice bike as long as you know the most important part of a first real bike is if the seat can go low enough to learn how to bike

Perfect bike for my 4 year old grandson. The quality is top notch and he will get a couple of years on it as he grows, the the little sister will get it and he will move on to the 20 inch Specialized. And did I mention he loves it.

Great bike, very nicely made. But too big for my 4 year old that is 39". His feet do not touch the ground. Now we have an expensive bike that can not be used.

Was a little bit smaller than I anticipated but still a very well built bike. The components and quality are exactly what you would expect from specialized and the price point made it a no brainer. The kid LOVES it as her first bike without training wheels.

This is a nice little bike but I have been frustrated in finding a pair of training wheels that easily fit. I'm here to save you the headache ... just order the Wald 10252 set.

This one here fell from Heaven! BD (((Random Act of Kindness))) My neigbors boyfriend gave me this bike brand new with tools & tags attached! My 6 year old grandaughter learned how to ride on this bike. Had it over s year now with no issues. Peddling is easy & handles great! She's outgrowing it and will be time for the little cousins to learn & share this beauty! I highly recomment this bike.

This is a great little bike. Very well built and nice quality. It comes with fast Pathfinder Pro tires, nice seat, KMC EPT chain, extra chainring guard if you won’t want to run the big plastic one. You can retrofit training wheels if your child is not ready for 2 wheels yet. specializeds training wheels do not fit though. The only negative is that the seatpost needs to be cut down to lower the seat all the way if your child is on low end to start riding the bike. The gearing is a little low for riding around the neighborhood, it seems like 8mph is about the max speed for my son with a comfortable cadence

By far the best 16" built on the market today. Geometry is spot-on and one of the only ones I could find with handbrakes and a freewheel, that work great. This is a "real" bike for your kid, not a department store trinket.

Geometry made all the difference in learning to ride a bike for the first time.

My son is 4 and he absolutely loves this bike! It’s a perfect fit and lightweight enough where he can comfortably push it uphill if he needs to. Handlebars and nice and wide & the brakes are perfect for those little fingers.

This is the second part of my review, in the first part of the review address the quality of the bike, and in this part I want to address the attention to detail. I was extremely impressed to find that the tire logos were lined up with the valve stem. That's a touch that you only find from mechanics who truly care about the quality of their work, and one that's becoming more difficult to find from off the shelf bikes. If a mechanic cares enough to pay attention to something that is no more than a cosmetic detail that 99% of people will never notice, then you know that they're also paying attention to the critical components dring assembly.

I bought the bike online, so a little assembly was required (4 bolts to attach the bars) but specialized was absolutely brilliant in detaching the bars at the stem as there's no need to fuss with preload on the headset bearings or any adjustments that are critical. This bike even comes with a torque wrench, which I've never seen included with the bike before. The bike fits my kid well and the seat post has quite a bit of adjustment, so I think most kids will get at least two summers out of this bike if not more. She absolutely loves the bike it pedals nice and smooth and the brakes are amazing, and is a bonus they even have an adjustable reach so your kid doesn't need to have baseball mitts for hands to reach the lever. Perfect mini mountain bike for my 3yr old. He loves the hand brakes and free wheel, a feature usually on only larger frames.

This is the perfect bike for a child that is comfortable riding already. Great stepping stone bike for a growing child, lightweight, good gearing, amazing hand brakes for small hands.

This bike looks great, but it is NOT training wheel compatible. They need to make this more apparent on the Product Detail page, and they also need to make it more apparent that the universal 16" training wheels sold on this website are also NOT compatible with this bike. It is incredibly frustrating from a user perspective to have to read a customer review to find this out. I also don't understand why you would make a universal training wheel, but then create a kid's bike that does not have the screws for the universal training wheel product. Very disappointed that there is no solution to get training wheels on this bike for my son.

My son has outgrown his balance bike with ease so we decided to get him a bigger bike. He is 102cm tall which falls in the range for this bike. Well it seems it doesn’t. He doesn’t touch the floor, even with his toes. We are forced to either return it or get training wheels as he cannot ride it with no ground support whatsoever. I am very disappointed and sad that something that it took me so long to decide ends up backfiring horribly.

We just bought this bike today! My little hasn’t taken a break yet! We love this bike… only thing we had to modify was the seat… the one on it was too long. She had a hard time stopping because it hit in the wrong spot. With a smaller seat she has no problems.
