How are carbon bikes made? Peter Denk talks Specialized Stumpjumper

Product Details

Add Icon

The Stumpjumper Pro is a top-tier, do-it-all, mind- terrain- and horizon-expansion tool. You get the same FACT 11m carbon frame as our S-Works Stumpjumper, with class-leading light weight and all-new suspension kinematics. You get a bike that devours quad-searing climbs with ease, and absolutely scorches the descents. You get the picture: This thing rips.

Top that off with SRAM's XO1 Eagle AXS 12-speed drivetrain and FOX Factory suspension and the “bang for the buck” factor is almost as rad as the bike itself.

  • THE TRAIL BENCHMARK—When we set out to design the all-new Stumpjumper, we pursued some hefty goals. It had to excel on any kind of trail, for every style of rider. To achieve that, we went after serious weight reduction without sacrificing durability, a stiff, responsive chassis that still rides light and lively, geometry that improves everyone’s riding, and the best suspension kinematics we know how to design. Turns out, you can have your cake and eat it too with the new Stumpjumper.
  • THE SWEETEST 130MM OF TRAVEL YOU’LL EVER RIDE—We massaged the kinematics of the Stumpjumper suspension to bring out the very best all-round performance possible in a 130mm package. Countless hours of suspension lab development and field testing created a refined mid-travel ripper that eats big terrain like a gravity fed beast, handles like a dream everywhere, and climbs like it has a motor.
  • PROGRESSIVE GEOMETRY—The S-Sizing geometry of the new Stumpjumper hits the progressive sweet spot. It’s long, low and slack, with a short offset fork and a steeper seat tube angle. These numbers combine to make your ride more stable, more carvealicious, more comfortable climbing, more better everywhere. With FlipChip adjustability you’re able to further fine-tune your fit, ensuring that your new Stumpjumper performs flawlessly on whatever terrain you choose.
  • RIDER-FIRST ENGINEERED™—Rider-First Engineered™ frames use a size-specific approach to ride characteristics that ensures benchmark handling and flawless performance, regardless of frame or rider size. Whether you’re a jump-happy grom riding an S1, or a DH-fiend giant in need of the lengthy S6, you’ll experience the same ride traits – rail-sharp cornering and balanced front and rear stiffness – at the lightest-possible weight, And by light, we mean real light: 2,250 grams (S-Works, S-3 size, with rear shock).
  • SWAT™—We introduced the SWAT™ door on the Stumpjumper in 2016, adding room IN your frame for those “oh sh**t” necessities like pumps and spare tubes, and immediately rendering jersey pockets redundant.

Seat angle

Seat angle is too steep to accomodate long femurs. It is impossible to slide the saddle back far enough to get a proper position over the pedals. For shuttle rides and keeping the front wheel on the ground on short steep climbs it is fine. For long periods of pedaling the strange geometry can cause injury if you have long femurs.

Smooth Criminal

This bike is straight up amazing. You cannot find a better set up for the $ given the sale price right now. It flies up and down the mountain. Smooths everything out. As long as you're not expecting it to handle massive drops on consistent basis, I guarantee you will love this bike. Fantastic trail bike.

Wow! Efficient Climber & Capable Downhiller

Wow, what a ride ! At about 28 lbs the bike almost pedals itself going up. For some reason I can't explain it's a very efficient pedaler over my 27.5 Pivot Mach 4 XC bike. On singletrack this rig eats roots like they weren't there and is responsive yet stable on hyper-turny downhill berms. Since I'm not a downhiller I don't need a big-hit bike, nor one that does gap jumps. The Stumpjumper Pro more than meets my needs and checks off pretty well every metric and component pick one would hope to have, including carbon wheels and SRAM AXS electronic shifting. Oh and many compliments on the Oasis-gloss color !

Sweet Baby Jesus

Sure the color might not be your thing but this bike will be. Pick it up right now while you can on sale. This bike is everything you wished for minus the S-Works logo.

2016 Carbon SJ Hangs

Okay, I have been on the Pro for a year with 150+ rides to date. Every time I get on it I find I am in the “Zone” while the machine is more of an extension of my desire and will up, down, left, right, and in the air. It is the best bike I have ever ridden. I want to say I am looking forward to the next model/year but then this one will hang with my 2016 (I loved that bike). I just can’t imagine it getting any better. This bike is 10 out of 5 stars! Roll’n in Seattle!

Steeze machine, rides great. S4

Steeze machine, rides great. S4 with pedals is running 29lbs 11oz set up tubeless. Mine didn’t come with the Swaterbottle, not sure if that’s normal or not but its not a deal breaker for sure. Overall super fun playful and reasonably capable bike, I’ll probably put a larger volume spacer in the rear shock. (I weigh 165lbs).

Superior Ride

I upgraded from a 2016 Stumpjumper Expert and I am amazed how much smoother this bike is. The Grip2 damper in the Fox 34 is the real deal allowing you to dial in small bump compliance and maintain support for larger hits. I was concerned that the steeper head tube angle would negatively impact maneuverability, but that proved to be untrue as this things rails. This bike also climbs noticeably better than the 2016 Sttumpy with better anti-squat, to the point that I also sold my Epic. This is a true do-it-all bike.

2022 Stumpjumper Pro is most excellent

A few months ago, I upgraded my 2008 Stumpjumper Elite which I had upgraded to full XT components, to the brand new 2022 Stumpjumper Pro. This new bike is a fantastic design, and I am really enjoying it. It is easy to adjust, easy to dial in, and/or easy to just jump on it and go have a great ride.... Off Road or on road, young or old like me (66 years old) you are really going to enjoy this ride. Even at 66 years old, I like to get a little airborne and I can comfortably do this on the 2022 Stumpjumper Pro. I am slow going up the mountains off road, but I do not have any issues keeping up with much younger riders going down the single tracks, etc. This bike can handle rough terrain and keep running straight and solid. Smooth shifting, smooth breaking, smooth handling, nice suspension, nice crankset, nice X01 AXS drivetrain, nice brakes, nice travel. NOT cheap, but I am extremely happy with the overall performance of my new bike.

Best one yet

I have had 4 Stumpjumpers and this one is the best so far. Climbs like crazy and still descends like it should.

Awesome

Absolutely love this bike. Now I’m coming from a 20 year old aluminum hardtail so maybe my perspective is skewed but I can climb harder, descend faster and this blue color is a neckbreaker for sure. It’s 95% of the s-works version but 20% cheaper.

No pedal strikes

Wanting more suspension than my ‘19 Blur TR, the Stumpy Pro seemed the choice. I decided to shave some weight by upgrading cranks and chain for black XX1, and swapped tires to Specialized tan wall Ground Control (nothing more needed in South Carolina). After a few pedal strikes, I flipped the chip to HI and absolutely dig this bike. The only item missing is a rubber flap between the rear triangle and main frame to prevent a wedged rock, I’ll find something before that happens. The bike was a bit pricey but overall I’m very satisfied!!

SJ Pro preliminary review

Only 2 rides on the bike before the snow hit. Previous bike was a 2016 alloy SJ with 27.5 wheels upgraded to SRAM 12 speed drive train--wow, what a difference! With pedals the new Pro weighed in at 29 lbs--two and half pounds lighter than my old SJ (thanks to carbon bars, wheels, frame, cranks)! Didn't get to really put it through its full capability on home turf at Kingdom Trails in VT and test rode on rocks and roots in pretty flat terrain. But its light and zesty handling and rolls over stuff that I would've previously stalled out on . . . can't wait to really ride

SJ Pro - Great Ride

Coming off a hard tail 29'r and a fixed seat post, this bike is a game changer for most of what I ride. Climbing is fantastic and with more traction than I previously had on the chunky stuff. Point it down, drop the post and it's a confidence inspiring blast. Brakes took a few rides to seat but work fantastic and loving the XO1 Eagle AXS (super easy to tune and no shifting cables to clean!). I was waiting over a year for the SWorks, but this thing came available at my LBS in Aug, w/ the AXS XO1 ... it really had everything I wanted and nothing I didn't. Wheels are spec'd well and tires are also a good combination... overall super happy w/ the SJ Pros climbing and descending performance, and would recommend to others. Great job Specialized... and thank you to my LBS - Incycle bicycles.
